After nine years, the Encore Entertainment Company ended their Grand Champion drought in an amazing way at Beavercreek High School this past weekend.
In addition to winning Grand Champion, Encore also won Best Choreography, Best Vocals, Best Band, Best Costume, Best Set, and took first place in the class A division.
This grand championship means something a little different to everyone who was a part of it. To senior member Caroline Calhoun, who was awarded her first grand championship in her second year of Encore, it was “an experience that made me proud to be a part of Encore. Your hard work, dedication, and passion really do pay off.”
Director Tyler Skidmore says winning Grand Champion, “is a nice goal, but it’s not an end.” This victory, which was his first grand championship as director, meant a little more to Skidmore.
“It was really fun to kind of feel that energy,” he said, “I did do a couple fist pumps.”
Being a part of Encore means rigorous rehearsals, and months upon months of hard work. Encore begins learning their show at the end of summer each year, despite the fact that competition season doesn’t begin until January.
Encore Senior Ben Ferling says weekly rehearsals on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7:30 or later are definite, along with additional rehearsals on the weekends. For Saturday competitions, Encore members report to the school as early as 4:00 A.M. and can return as late as 2:00 A.M. on Sunday.
They work tirelessly to get the show to run perfectly. Spending entire rehearsals going over small details is not unusual. Skidmore says that this is one of this particular group’s strengths.
“If I, or another one of the directors were to say ‘this is how this phrase should go’ they’ll take the time and make the adjustment,” said Skidmore.
There’s no doubt that this year’s group of singer/dancers deserve the Grand Champion title.
Skidmore says, “to get the grand championship you can’t have any sign of weakness, you have to just own the show the entire 20 or 25 minutes, and that’s what they’re doing.”
Encore is travelling to Findlay this Saturday (January 30th) to participate in the Findlay Fest show choir competition.
