This past weekend marked this year’s Sectionals Tournament for Medina Varsity Wrestling in the Greater Cleveland Conference Division. To make it to this point, our varsity wrestlers endured some pretty tough physical training.
Their first step was making it on to the wrestling team itself. Six days a week, MHS wrestlers are pinned against each other and other schools around the county. It’s such hard work that less than 30 males have been able to persevere through the entire season.
“It’s a very tough sport, and a grueling season,” explains Wade Chapman, assistant coach for the wrestling team. “It takes a special type of person to be able to push their bodies to the limit day-in and day-out. In order to be a wrestler, you have to be mentally tough.”
But for those who push past the physical and mental strain, there is a fantastic pay-off. Just this past Saturday, February 20th, our varsity wrestlers took to Wadsworth High School to compete in the GCC Division I Sectionals Tournament. The schools involved included Wadsworth, Copley, Brunswick, North Royalton, Nordonia, Berea-Midpark, Akron Firestone, Midview, Cuyahoga Falls, Wooster, Highland, and Strongsville.
To those who are not yet informed of how to league progresses, sectionals can be seen as quarter-finals. Then comes the District Tournament, which are the semifinals. Finally there is the State Tournament, which is the final contest to see who is the best in the whole state.
Our Medina Bees performed extremely well at sectionals, taking fourth place in the tournament with a score of 157 points. Five wrestlers competed in the Championship Matches, and senior Zach DeFraine took first place in his individual weight class.
“I think we all wrestled really well last week, and we’ve got a good amount of guys who made it into districts,” says Brady Chrisman, a sophomore wrestler on the varsity team. Chrisman placed in second place in his weight class, and will be moving on to the District Tournament.
We have six qualifying wrestlers for the District Tournament; Brady Chrisman, Jared Dressler, Alex DeFraine, Zach DeFraine, Alex Sadowsky, and Thomas Tinnirello. There are also two alternates, Ian Senz and Isaiah Helton, who will both be sent to the tournament. Districts will take place at Perrysburg High School on Saturday, February 27 in Perrysburg, Ohio. Wish our wrestlers good luck!
