Coming up this Sunday, February 28, at 7 p.m. ET, are the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars. This ceremony celebrates the performance of pioneers in the filming and music industry, awarding the best of the best.

This award has eluded Leonardo DiCaprio for every nomination he has received.

DiCaprio has been known to star in many famous roles in the movie industry, including The Great Gatsby, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Django Unchained. He has also been famous across social media as being one of the most Oscar nominated actors who has not received a single award in his category.

“I think he is a very talented actor, and credit is deserved where credit is due,” says Emily Beedlow, a sophomore student here at MHS.

Multiple people agree with Beedlow, insisting that DiCaprio deserves to have won an Oscar at this point. Others disagree, claiming that an Oscar is not necessary to be known as a great actor or actress.

“If Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t win an Oscar, I won’t care as much as other people, because it doesn’t affect my life at all,” says Kaz Kuczma, a freshman at MHS.

DiCaprio has been known to win many other kinds of film awards, but the Academy Awards have been just out of reach for over 20 years. He was first nominated for Best Supporting Actor in his role of Arnie Grape in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?

Since then, DiCaprio has also been nominated for Best Actor for his role as Howard Hughes in The Aviator in 2005. He was again nominated in 2007 for his role as Danny Archer in Blood Diamond. Both times he was denied the award, and had to wait another 7 years before his next chance.

In 2014, DiCaprio was once again nominated for his main role as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street. This time he had come extremely close to winning, but the award was instead given to Matthew McConaughey for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Now, DiCaprio has been given yet another chance for the motion picture that is still currently out, The Revenant. He plays main character Hugh Glass, a spectacular survivalist and frontiersman taking place in 1823. After a ferocious bear attack, he is left for dead by his hunting team, and must find a way back home to his family.

This year could finally be the year that DiCaprio wins the prize that has been out of his reach for so many years. Or, DiCaprio could fall victim to routine, and be denied yet another chance of earning this prize. Either way, the Academy Awards this year promise to hold some very interesting results.
